![]() ![]() In 2021, in addition to publishing a book, he and his longtime collaborator James Ellis Deakins created an immensely successful podcast, Team Deakins, on the subject of filmmaking. ![]() He is also the only cinematographer to have been awarded the honour of CBE in 2013 as well as receiving the honour of knighthood in 2021. He has also been awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards from the American Society of Cinematographers, the British Society of Cinematographers and the National Board of Review. He has also been nominated 16 times for the top award of the American Society of Cinematographers, 10 times for the BAFTA award and 11 times for the British Society of Cinematographers. It was very touching actually, very moving. The Devon-born cameraman, 72, was knighted for services to film by the Prince of Wales at an investiture on Tuesday. Known widely for his film works, Roger has been nominated 15 times for an Academy Award and won twice for the movies BLADERUNNER 2049 and 1917. Oscar-winning cinematographer Sir Roger Deakins has said his knighthood is for everyone he has ever worked with as he received the royal honour at Windsor Castle. Throughout them all, his sense of irony shows clearly. There are the images that document a vanished postwar Britain, as well as a collection of photos that express his love of the seaside and finally frames from around the world, caught while traveling for his cinematic work. In his monograph, Byways, one finds a wide range of images. Throughout his career still photography has remained one of Deakins few hobbies although it is more often an excuse for him to spend hours just walking, his camera over his shoulder, with no purpose but to observe. Here he developed his love of still photography. Cinematographer Roger Deakins breaks down his most iconic films, including 1917, Prisoners, The Shawshank Redemption, Sicario, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, Skyfall. He studied Graphic Design at the Bath College of Art and before continuing on to the National Film School, he spent time shooting still photographs for North Devon, with the intent of capturing the disappearing rural farm life. Signed copies of Byways will also be available for purchase and pre-order at the gallery. He is a favourite collaborator of the Coen brothers and Sam Mendes to name a few, and in March 2018 Deakins won his first Oscar (from his 14th nomination) for. The opening reception will also include a book signing featuring Deakins’s book, Byways, published by Damiani Publishers in September 2021 and has since been reprinted 5 times. Works on display will include photographs featured in Byways, as well as new, never-before seen photographs. The exhibition is slated to open to the public September 17 th, 2022 and run through the end of the year.
